Ways God Communicates With Us
There’s a truth about God that I can’t shake lately: God is expressive. He is not silent, distant, or detached. He is a God who communicates—clearly, personally, and purposefully. And the more I reflect on this, the more amazed I am.
God is the “Great Communicator.”
As a communicator myself, this captivates me. It’s one thing for us to communicate about God, but it is something far more powerful to recognize that God communicates about Himself—His character, His presence, His desire for us.
Out of His great love for us, God wants us to know what He is saying, and He uses multiple methods of communication to ensure His message is clear and accessible.
This personal and expressive nature distinguishes Him from every other world religion. Yes, He is Holy, Pure, Powerful, and Just—but He is also profoundly Personal and Present. He does not communicate with us from a distance; He is close, personal, and He deeply loves us.
If you’ve ever felt unsure about hearing from God, consider the many ways He has already spoken.
Ways God Communicates with Us
1. God Communicates Through His Identity
The triune nature of God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—reveals a depth of relationship and expression within God Himself. The Trinity is, in many ways, God’s eternal communication of His own nature. It is profound and mysterious, yet it tells us this: God has always been a God who expresses Himself.
2. God Communicates Through Creation
Nature—Look around—mountains, oceans, deserts, stars, and every animal, insect and living thing. Creation is God’s message on display.
People—despite all our differences—are remarkably alike. I love how diverse we are! While working in language and culture for nearly 15 years, what fascinated me most about diversity was not what separates us, but what unites us. The truth of God’s character resides within each of us—it’s evident. The desires of the human heart rise above language, culture, demographics, social class, or personal experience. Whether we acknowledge it or not, we are made in His image.
3. God Communicates Through His Written Word
God did not leave us guessing. He expresses himself through the written word (Scripture – The Bible).
Because the Bible is so accessible today, it’s easy to forget how astonishing it truly is.
Think about this: the God of the universe chose to reveal His message of redemption and salvation in written form. That alone should captivate us and stir in us a desire to know His Word deeply.
In Scripture, God has put on display the intricate story of His redemptive work—His plan to draw His people out of darkness and restore them to Himself. Within the pages of the Bible, we find truth, life, guidance for the present, and insight for the future. If ever there were a book worthy of our full attention, it is the Bible.
The Bible reflects God’s authoritative, trustworthy, and powerful communication. It is meant to shape our faith and guide our lives. We cannot afford to ignore it or let it sit unopened. When you read God’s Word, you discover who He is and allow His truth to speak into your life.
4. God Communicates by Showing Up In-Person
Jesus is God’s most complete and personal self-disclosure. If you’ve ever wondered what God is like or what He wants to say, take a look at Jesus’ life and teachings.
Scripture calls Jesus the Word—the logos in Greek—meaning God’s speech, reason, message, and divine expression. Before taking on flesh, He existed with God and as God. He is the eternal expression of God Himself.
John 1:1–3 reveals this breathtaking truth:
“In the beginning was the Word (Remember: logos – God’s divine expression – his communication about himself), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.”
Then comes the moment that changed everything: “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us…” John 1:14
The eternal God—the Creator of all things—entered human history, putting on flesh. In Jesus, God made Himself known on earth.
John 1:18 confirms: “…the only Son… has made Him known.”
If you’re unclear about who Jesus is or what He taught, He is absolutely worth exploring. Everything God wants us to know about Him is revealed in Christ.
5. God Communicates Through His People
When Jesus returned to the Father, He didn’t leave us alone. He sent the Holy Spirit—our Advocate, Helper, Counselor, Teacher, and Comforter.
The Spirit is God’s ongoing communication with His people, given to all who believe in Jesus. Through the Holy Spirit, God reveals His will and His ways, His character and His power, and His presence in tender, personal, and intimate ways.
Though we are fragile, earthen vessels, God chooses to dwell within us. His life is on display through ours.
This is one of the remarkable ways God expresses Himself—through the words, actions, transformation, and testimony of His people.
If you’ve listened to the @faithconversationspodcast, you’ve observed this already. God reveals Himself through the real stories of real people who have encountered His presence. As we experience Him, it is important for us to testify to His goodness and proclaim the work of His hands in our lives.
6. God Communicates Through His Church
God reveals Himself through the shared life of His people—the Church.
1 Corinthians 12:12 paints this picture beautifully:
“For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.”
We were created for community. God designed each of us with a distinct purpose and unique gifts, and when we come together, we display the fullness of His character in a way we never could alone. As one body, we carry His love, His compassion, and His message into the world.
Christ continues his work in the world today through His redeemed people. Through the Church, God communicates his love—lived out in tangible, bold, and beautiful ways.
If you’re not connected to a church community, you’re missing a meaningful part of your faith journey—and the Church is incomplete without you. You were not meant to walk alone. Now is the time to recognize your place in God’s family and embrace life within a community of believers.
Do you see it now? God is expressive.
He is a God who speaks, who reveals, who draws near.
He is not silent. He is not distant. He is not hard to find.
And if the living God has something to say, don’t you want to hear it?
Let’s not delay in seeking Him. He has made Himself known so that we might truly know Him. He is accessible, present, and ready to meet those who seek Him with their whole heart.
When you seek Him—you will find Him.
And when you find Him, everything changes.
